The History of the Blood Type Diet

In 1996, Dr. D‘Adamo, a naturopathic doctor, first introduced the idea of the Blood Type Diet in his book Eat Right 4 Your Type. The blood type based diet claims that different blood types have different ways of processing and reacting to the foods you eat. According to the diet, eating the preferred food for your blood type will allow you to lead a longer, healthier life.

How the Blood Type Diet Works

According to Dr. D’Adamo’s “Eat Right 4 Your Type", here are some of the recommended dietary plans:

  • Type O (Blood Type 1): Those with the blood type-O should focus on eating a lean high-protein diet. This includes various animal meats, fish, fruits and vegetables. Type O’s should also avoid wheat, dairy products, and legumes since gluten, which is found in these products, is the leading reason for weight gain.
  • Type A (Blood Type 2): Type-A individuals are more likely to develop diseases since they have a more sensitive immune system. Their dietary pattern should include vegetarian and organic foods and avoid red meat and dairy products.
  • Type B (Blood Type 3): People with type-B have a stronger immune system and tends to resist chronic diseases in comparison to other blood types. They can pick a much more diverse yet balanced diet with moderate exercise.
  • Type AB (Blood Type 4): Type-AB has the most complex biological structure since it is the combination of A and B. Their diet is solely focused on boosting immunity such as fish, dairy, fruits, and vegetables.

Is the Blood Type Diet effective? What do you gain from the Blood Type Diet?

Although the concept may be alluring, there is no scientific evidence to support that blood type can be used as a determiner for dietary plans. There was even a study in 2014 showing the relation regarding the blood type based diet and cardiometabolic risk factors. The result showed some improvements in some cardiometabolic risk factor but it was unrelated to the individual’s blood type.

The actual benefit of using the Blood Type Diet is that the individual learns to eat a healthier and balanced diet eliminating the consumption of junk foods.

The Blood Type Diet is not proven to be scientifically true but its dietary plan can be considered somewhat safe. The Blood Type Diet encourages the individual to eat healthy and organic foods and cut back on the unwanted ones. This dietary plan gives the individual the ability to organize their regimen for the better since it not only specifies the food you should consume but also the physical exercise that your body needs. The healthier their lifestyle is, the less susceptible they are to chronic diseases.
